Azure Virtual Desktop: New Name, New Features

Written by Charles Ian Pritchard | June 23, 2021

Microsoft has renamed Windows Virtual Desktop to Azure Virtual Desktop, introducing new features and simplified options for managed service providers. This change reflects the platform's evolution, offering enhanced support for hybrid and remote workplaces.

What is Azure Virtual Desktop?

Windows Virtual Desktop was a success story for many companies providing home offices during the pandemic. Microsoft now shares its vision for a cloud VDI platform supporting hybrid and remote workplaces.

What new options does Azure Virtual Desktop offer for managed service providers?

Microsoft is introducing a new pricing model and options for delivering apps to external users, known as Remote App Streaming. Starting next year, a new user-based pricing of $5.50 per external user will make it simpler for service providers to deliver apps as a service.

Here's an overview of features available or coming soon in the public preview of Azure Virtual Desktop:

  • Azure Active Directory improvements: AVD virtual machines can connect automatically to Azure Active Directory and Microsoft Endpoint Manager.
  • Windows 10 Enterprise multisession virtual machines can be managed like physical devices with Microsoft Endpoint Manager.
  • Improved onboarding for setting up Azure Virtual Desktop.
  • Growing partner ecosystem: Microsoft continues to build strong partnerships.
