UN COP16: How 10,000+ Pages Were Printed Sustainably for Thousands of Conference Participants

SCC, the IT services partner behind the 2024 Paris Olympics, needed to provide thousands of COP16 participants with reliable, sustainable printing from any mobile device across a massive conference venue. With 12 ezeep Hubs and 40 printers deployed across multiple VLANs, over 10,000 pages were printed, and every CO2 emission was offset through Justdiggit.

COP16

Sustainable Cloud Printing at the World's Largest Desertification Conference

When thousands of delegates from around the world gather for a UN conference, they still need to print. Schedules, statements, conference documents, and briefing materials all need to reach paper at some point. The challenge is making that happen for a diverse, international audience using every type of device, without building out complex IT infrastructure that will be torn down two weeks later.

The Challenge

The UN Climate Change Conference COP16, held from December 2 to 13, 2024, in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, was organized by GL Events, a global leader in event management. SCC, a French IT services provider with a track record that includes the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, was responsible for IT services at the event.

The printing requirements were demanding: thousands of participants needed to print from their own mobile devices at print stations distributed throughout a large venue. Simplicity was non-negotiable since every delegate, regardless of technical skill or device type, needed to print without assistance. At the same time, a UN conference focused on combating desertification could not ignore the environmental footprint of its own operations.

The Solution

SCC selected ezeep as the cloud printing platform for COP16. The setup consisted of 40 printers from various manufacturers connected through 12 ezeep Hubs, deployed across up to three VLANs throughout the venue. The Hubs were pre-configured with their MAC addresses in the ezeep portal, enabling quick on-site deployment without complex infrastructure.

Participants printed directly from their Android and iOS devices to the nearest print station. No drivers, no apps to install, no local servers. Print jobs were sent through the cloud and routed to the correct printer on site.

The Outcome

Over 10,000 pages were printed across the 12 Hub-supported print stations during the conference, many of them double-sided. Numerous print jobs were initiated from mobile devices. The CO2 emissions from all print jobs processed through ezeep were offset through contributions to Justdiggit, an environmental organization dedicated to sustainable reforestation of degraded areas, directly aligned with COP16's mission to combat desertification.

Why It Matters

COP16 is a proof point for ezeep at a scale and profile that few other case studies can match. A UN conference with thousands of international participants, organized by the same IT partner that ran the Paris Olympics, running on ezeep Hubs and cloud printing. For any event organizer, conference venue, or IT services company planning large-scale temporary printing infrastructure, this demonstrates that ezeep can handle the complexity without the infrastructure overhead.
