Cloud Printing Basics

What is cloud printing?

Cloud printing is a way to send print jobs from any device to any printer over the internet, without requiring a direct connection, local drivers, or an on-premises print server. The print job is processed in the cloud and delivered to the destination printer through a lightweight local connector or hardware bridge. This replaces the traditional model where each device needs a printer-specific driver and either a direct network path or a print server to reach the printer.

How does cloud printing work?

The user prints from their device using a virtual printer driver or a web-based print interface. The job is sent to a cloud service, which handles rendering (converting the document into the format the target printer understands). The rendered job is then delivered to the printer through a local connector, such as the ezeep Hub or ezeep Connector software. The user's device never needs to know the make, model, or location of the printer. All of that is handled in the cloud.

What is the difference between cloud printing and traditional print server printing?

Traditional print server printing relies on a dedicated Windows Server machine at each location to queue, render, and deliver print jobs. That server needs hardware, licensing, maintenance, driver updates, and a VPN or direct network path for remote users. Cloud printing replaces all of that with a cloud-hosted service. There is no print server to maintain, no driver to install on endpoints, and no VPN required. A small connector device or software agent bridges the local printer to the cloud.

What is serverless printing?

Serverless printing is a cloud printing architecture that eliminates on-premises print servers entirely. All print rendering happens in the cloud, and a lightweight hardware device (like the ezeep Hub) or software connector bridges printers to the cloud platform. No Windows Server infrastructure, no local spooler management, and no driver distribution to endpoints. ezeep is a serverless printing platform.

What is driverless printing?

Driverless printing means no manufacturer-specific printer drivers are installed on the user's device. Instead, the device uses a lightweight virtual printer driver that sends the print job to the cloud. The cloud service matches the job to the correct driver from a hosted library (ezeep maintains over 6,000 drivers) and renders it into the printer-specific format. This eliminates driver conflicts, spooler crashes, and vulnerabilities like PrintNightmare.

What devices can print using cloud printing?

With ezeep, users can print from Windows, macOS, ChromeOS, iOS, Android, Linux, and web browsers. Virtual desktop environments including Azure Virtual Desktop, Windows 365, Citrix, and Omnissa Horizon are also supported. All platforms are managed from the same cloud console with the same policies.

Do I still need a print server if I use cloud printing?

No. Cloud printing with ezeep replaces on-premises print servers. The ezeep Hub is a compact hardware device that connects printers to the cloud without any Windows Server infrastructure. For organizations that still have an existing print server, the ezeep Connector for Print Server can bridge those printers to the cloud as a transitional step.

Getting Started with ezeep

How do I set up ezeep?

Setup follows three steps. First, create an ezeep account and start a free trial. Second, connect your printers by deploying an ezeep Hub (hardware) or installing the ezeep Connector (software) on a Windows PC that already has printers installed. The Hub automatically discovers network printers; the Connector imports printers already configured on that PC. Third, invite users by email, Self-Join link, or Entra ID sync, assign them to groups, and assign printers to those groups. Users install the ezeep Print App or use the browser-based Print Now feature, and printers appear automatically.

How long does setup take?

Most organizations can go from account creation to first print in under 30 minutes. The ezeep Hub takes a few minutes to plug in and connect to Wi-Fi. Printer discovery is automatic. User invitations can be sent immediately from the admin portal.

What do I need to get started?

An internet connection, at least one printer, and either an ezeep Hub or a Windows PC to run the ezeep Connector software. Users need the ezeep Print App (available for Windows, macOS, ChromeOS, iOS, and Android) or a web browser for Print Now. No print servers, no special network configuration, and no printer drivers on endpoints.

What is the ezeep Hub?

The ezeep Hub is a compact hardware device that connects your local printers to the ezeep cloud. It replaces print servers and always-on PCs. The Hub connects over Wi-Fi, automatically discovers printers on the local network or via USB, and bridges them to the cloud. One Hub can connect multiple printers. It supports RFID/NFC card readers for Pull Printing authentication and is managed remotely from the ezeep admin portal.

What is the ezeep Connector?

The ezeep Connector is software that runs on a Windows PC or Windows Server. It imports all printers already installed on that machine into the ezeep cloud. This is useful for environments where a Windows device is already connected to printers, or as a transition path from an existing print server to fully serverless printing with the ezeep Hub.

Can I try ezeep for free?

Yes. ezeep offers a 14-day free trial with full functionality across all features. After the trial, your account automatically moves to the Free plan (up to 10 users, 1 connector, unlimited user print jobs). You can upgrade to Pro, Business, or Enterprise at any time.

Printers and Compatibility

What printers does ezeep support?

ezeep supports virtually all standard network and USB printers. The cloud rendering engine maintains a library of over 6,000 printer drivers covering major manufacturers including HP, Xerox, Konica Minolta, Kyocera, Brother, Epson, Lexmark, Ricoh, Canon, Zebra, Dymo, and many others. If a specific model's driver is not already in the library, you can request it and the ezeep team will add it.

Does ezeep work with label printers and receipt printers?

Yes. ezeep supports specialty printers including thermal label printers (Zebra, Dymo, Brother) and receipt printers commonly used in retail, warehousing, and logistics. These printers connect through the ezeep Hub or Connector just like any standard printer.

Can I use ezeep with printers I already own?

Yes. ezeep works with your existing printer hardware. There is no requirement to purchase new printers or replace older models. If the printer works on your network today, it can be connected to ezeep through the Hub or Connector. No firmware changes, embedded apps, or vendor-specific middleware are needed on the printer itself.

How do printers connect to the ezeep Cloud?

Printers connect through either the ezeep Hub (hardware) or the ezeep Connector (software). The Hub discovers printers automatically on the local network or via USB. The Connector imports printers from a Windows PC or server. Both create a secure, outbound-only connection to the ezeep Cloud. No inbound firewall ports need to be opened.

Can I mix different printer brands in the same environment?

Yes. ezeep handles driver variety in the cloud. Users see one consistent print experience regardless of whether they are printing to an HP, Xerox, Konica Minolta, Kyocera, or any other brand. The cloud rendering engine selects the correct driver automatically for each printer.

How many printers can I connect?

There is no per-printer limit. The number of connectors (Hubs or software Connectors) depends on your plan: 1 on Free, up to 10 on Pro, up to 80 on Business, and unlimited on Enterprise. Each connector can handle multiple printers.

Security and Compliance

How does ezeep secure print data?

All print data is encrypted in transit using HTTPS with TLS 1.3 (minimum TLS 1.2) from the user's device to the cloud and from the cloud to the printer. Print jobs are deleted from the server after successful delivery. The ezeep Hub communicates using outbound-only connections, so no inbound firewall ports need to be opened. Printers can be isolated in a VLAN with the Hub as the sole access point, supporting Zero Trust network principles.

Does ezeep protect against PrintNightmare?

Yes. PrintNightmare (CVE-2021-34527) and the 29 subsequent Windows Print Spooler vulnerabilities that Microsoft has patched since 2021 all exploit locally installed printer drivers. ezeep uses cloud-based rendering with a virtual printer driver (ThinPrint Output Gateway), so no manufacturer-specific drivers are installed on user devices. The attack surface these exploits depend on does not exist in an ezeep environment.

What happens to print data after a job completes?

Print jobs are deleted from the ezeep cloud after successful delivery to the printer. Pull Printing jobs that are not released within 72 hours are automatically deleted. No documents are retained on user endpoints or in the cloud after the job completes or expires.

Is ezeep GDPR compliant?

Yes. ezeep is designed with GDPR compliance built in. Print data is encrypted in transit, deleted after delivery, and processed on Microsoft Azure infrastructure within applicable data residency requirements. ISO 27001 certification is in progress.

What is Pull Printing and how does it improve security?

Pull Printing (also called Secure Release Printing or Follow-Me Printing) holds print jobs in a secure cloud queue instead of sending them directly to a printer. The document only prints when the user physically walks to a printer and authenticates via QR code (using the ezeep mobile app) or RFID/NFC card (using a card reader connected to the ezeep Hub). Nothing sits on the output tray unattended. This prevents unauthorized access to sensitive documents from HR, legal, finance, and healthcare.

Does ezeep support Single Sign-On?

Yes. Users can authenticate with their existing Microsoft, Google, or Apple credentials. No separate ezeep password is required. SSO is available on all plans. For enterprise identity management, ezeep integrates with Microsoft Entra ID for automated user and group synchronization on Business and Enterprise plans.

Features & Support

What is Printer Mapping?

Printer Mapping is how printers get assigned to users in ezeep. Admins can manually assign printers to groups from the admin portal, sync group assignments automatically from Microsoft Entra ID (Business/Enterprise), or use domain-based rules to auto-assign printers to users from a specific email domain. Users see their assigned printers on every device they sign into, with no endpoint configuration.

What are Printer Profiles?

Printer Profiles let admins set default print settings (color/mono, duplex, paper tray, copies, orientation) for each printer. These defaults are applied during cloud rendering, so they are enforced without configuring anything on the user's device. Users can override defaults when submitting a job, unless the admin locks a setting.

What are Group Policies?

Group Policies control which printing capabilities are available to each user group. Admins can toggle Pull Printing, Print Later, Printer Selection in User Portal, and Local Printer Support on or off per group. This lets different teams have different printing rules without per-device configuration.

What is Print Now?

Print Now is browser-based printing that requires no app installation. Users open a web page, upload a document, select a printer, and print. It works from any device with a web browser, making it ideal for guests, BYOD scenarios, and environments where installing software is not practical.

What is Print Monitoring?

Print Monitoring gives admins visibility into print activity across the entire organization. The tracking dashboard shows print volume, cost estimates, and usage by user, group, and printer. Data can be exported as CSV on Business and Enterprise plans. All monitoring happens through the cloud, with no agents required on endpoints.

Does ezeep support mobile printing?

Yes. The ezeep Print App is available for iOS and Android. Users can print documents, photos, and web pages directly from their mobile device to any assigned printer. For Pull Printing, the mobile app also serves as the QR code scanner for secure print release. Print Now (browser-based) also works on mobile devices without any app installation.

Can ezeep print from virtual desktops?

Yes. ezeep supports Azure Virtual Desktop, Windows 365, Citrix, and Omnissa Horizon. The virtual driver installs inside the session host and handles all printers without requiring individual printer drivers in the virtual image. This eliminates image bloat, compatibility conflicts, and driver maintenance in VDI environments.

A printer is not appearing in my list. What should I check?

First, confirm the printer is powered on and connected to the same network as the ezeep Hub or the PC running the ezeep Connector. Check the ezeep admin portal to verify the Hub or Connector is online. If the printer was recently added, it may take a moment for discovery to complete. If the printer still does not appear, restart the Hub or Connector and check again. For USB printers, ensure the cable is connected directly to the Hub.

Print jobs are not reaching the printer. What should I do?

Verify the Hub or Connector shows as online in the admin portal. Check that the user is assigned to a group that has the target printer. Confirm the printer is not paused or in an error state (out of paper, toner, or jammed). If using Pull Printing, ensure the job was released at the printer via QR code or RFID card. Restarting the Hub or Connector often resolves transient connectivity issues.

How do I contact ezeep support?

ezeep provides support through its help center. Pro plans and above include direct support with a response time of up to one business day. Enterprise plans include a custom support package. The ezeep admin portal also provides links to documentation and setup guides.

Where can I check if ezeep is experiencing an outage?

ezeep publishes service status updates at status.ezeep.com. You can check current system health and subscribe to notifications for planned maintenance or incidents.

Can I manage ezeep Hubs remotely?

Yes. On Pro, Business, and Enterprise plans, admins can access the Hub console directly from the admin portal for remote troubleshooting and configuration. The admin portal also shows online/offline status, connected printers, and firmware version for each Hub. Note that remote management requires the Hub to be online and connected to the internet.
